Taking an Exam

CIW Certification Agreement

Candidates must review and accept the CIW Certification Agreement to receive any certificate or credential from the CIW certification program. The CIW Certification Agreement describes your rights and responsibilities as a member of the CIW certification program. The CIW certification program cannot provide a candidate with an official certificate until that candidate accepts the CIW Certification Agreement. You can review and accept the CIW Certification Agreement by logging in to the CIW Candidate Information Center. If you have never logged in before, click the "I Want To Register With The CIW Program" link.

Testing Centers

CIW exams are available worldwide through Pearson VUE and Prometric. CIW exam candidates must complete a registration process with either Pearson VUE or Prometric, schedule an exam appointment, and arrange to pay the exam fee. Many CIW training providers offer Pearson VUE or Prometric testing services. Check with your training providers.

Pearson_VUE

Pearson VUE
Candidates can register for CIW exams online with Pearson VUE at the CIW exam registration page at www.pearsonvue.com/ciw. You may also register in person at any authorized Pearson VUE testing center.

Prometric

Prometric
Candidates can register for CIW exams online with Prometric at www.prometric.com/ciw. If you have taken CIW exams at Prometric, please have your candidate identification number available. This is usually a government ID number (national health insurance, Social Security number, etc.) or a six-character Prometric candidate number.

Choose the Information Technology Certifications selection on the drop-down box. You will be prompted for a Prometric Web username and password. You may then select CIW in the drop-down box to continue the registration process. CIW candidates in the United States and Canada may also call Prometric CIW exam registration at (800)380-EXAM (3926).

For telephone registration in other countries, please consult the Prometric Web site for a list of registration phone numbers and Authorized Prometric Testing Centers. The Prometric telephone representative will need the following information:

Accommodations for the Candidates with Disabilities
Prometric and Pearson VUE can provide accommodations for candidates with disabilities. Accommodations may include extended exam time, scratch paper, readers, or other measures as deemed necessary.

Call the Prometric or Pearson VUE registration telephone number for your country to arrange accommodations. Be prepared to submit documentation of your disability to Prometric or Pearson VUE for their review.

Accommodation requests are forwarded from Prometric and Pearson VUE to CIW for approval. CIW recommends making any accommodations requests as early as possible. Candidates who require accommodations must make their request to Prometric or Pearson VUE at least 30 days before the scheduled exam appointment.

Some forms of accommodation may not be available at a specific Prometric or Pearson VUE exam center.

When you make an exam appointment, you will receive instructions about cancellation procedures and directions to the testing center location. Testing center information is also available through the Prometric Test Center Locator at www.prometric.com/ciw, or on the Pearson VUE Web site at http://www.vue.com/ciw

Test Taking

Before the Exam
You should arrive at the testing center at least 15 minutes before the test is scheduled to begin. Identify yourself to the administrator. Two forms of identification are required. Both forms of identification must carry your signature. One form of identification must have your photograph. Suitable forms of identification can include a driver's license, passport, government or company ID card, and a major credit card.

You will then have the opportunity to learn how to use the computer-based testing system. This tutorial session is not part of the CIW exam, and will not reduce the amount of time you have to complete the exam.

Books, calculators, laptop computers, notes, scratch paper, and any reference materials are not allowed during any CIW test. Because CIW exams are computer-based, you will not need pens, pencils or paper to write the examination. With advance notice and approval from CIW and Prometric or Pearson VUE, accommodations for people with disabilities are available.

During the Exam
The exam will display a brief opening screen and some initial instructions. You may be asked to complete an optional survey. This survey is not a part of the exam, and will not reduce the amount of time you have to complete the CIW exam.

Many CIW exams are divided into modules, based on the job skills and requirements included in each exam. During the exam, there is no visual indication or signal that the exam is asking a question from a different module. Your exam results will include module scores.

Results

CIW Exam Score Report
As soon as you complete a CIW certification exam, you will see your score results immediately on your computer screen. You will also receive a hard copy of the score report from the testing center manager. This score report should print immediately after you complete the CIW exam. Keep a copy of this score report as proof that you have completed the exam. It contains valuable information that may be needed for verification purposes.

The score report shows whether you passed or failed the exam. The report indicates your score on each section of the exam. The score report does not include any information on specific questions. Partial credit is not awarded on questions.

To pass a CIW exam, a candidate must:

On some CIW exams, it is not possible to achieve the exact percentage indicates cut score in one or more exam sections. For these exams, the first breakpoint above the criterion is used to determine the pass or fail status of a section.

Example: A section on an exam has 12 questions. The minimum score for that section is 70%. The first breakpoint above the 70% minimum for a 12 item section is 9 questions, representing a 75% score or a passing score on this module. Marking 8 questions correct would result in a module grade of 66.67%, which is below the minimum 70% cut score for sections and would count as a failing score.

Exam Security Policy

CIW exams are administered under secure, proctored conditions at Authorized Prometric and VUE testing centers worldwide. Prometric and Pearson VUE help confirm the identity of exam candidates, and provide a controlled environment for collecting and transmitting exam results.

The CIW program does not release questions or answers to exam questions. This is a standard procedure for high-stakes certification exams, and helps maintain the value of the certification. All CIW examinations are copyrighted. To maintain the security and value of our program, we reserve the right to decertify and /or bar from examinations any individuals who republish or distribute our copyrighted certification exam questions.

Formal training is not a requirement for certification. CIW recommends using Official CIW Curriculum and preparation tools, including practice exams. See the CIW Store for more details, or ask your preferred training provider. Regardless, candidates are free to pursue any form and source of training and test preparation that suits their needs. However, candidates who are discovered to have used "braindump" sites may be decertified. Braindumps are collections of exam items that have been stolen from high-stakes certification exams. There are several international organizations that publish, distribute and sell these items illegally, under thousands of different organization names and Internet domains. Using these collections is a violation of both the CIW Exam Agreement and the CIW Certification Agreement and is grounds for decertification. If you are considering a practice test tool and are not sure of the legitimacy of the site, you can check it using CertGuard's free search tool at http://www.certguard.com/search.asp.

Exam Retake Policy
The CIW Exam Retake Policy outlines the conditions under which a candidate may retake a CIW exam. A waiting period between retakes of a single certification exam maintains the security of the exam and strengthens the value of the CIW certification. Each CIW exam is defined by a unique exam ID (e.g., 1D0-510). A retake is any subsequent sitting of an exam with the same CIW exam ID by the same candidate at any authorized testing center.

If a candidate passes a CIW exam, the candidate will not be allowed to retake that CIW exam. If the CIW exam objectives change, the exam ID changes to reflect the new exam version. Candidates who have passed an exam may sit a newer version of the exam that may have the same title but a different ID number.

If a candidate fails a CIW exam on his or her first attempt, a 24-hour waiting period is required between the first and second sittings of that CIW exam. Candidates are required to wait for a period of no fewer than thirty (30) calendar days from the date of the previous sitting before any third or subsequent sitting of the same CIW exam.

Exams administered in any ways that do not comply with the CIW Exam Retake Policy shall be considered invalid and ineligible for a refund.

If a candidate has violated this Exam Retake Policy, the candidate may be deemed ineligible to register for or schedule any CIW exam for a minimum period of twelve (12) months from the date of such determination.

In addition, any candidate determined to have violated the CIW Exam Retake Policy may be subject to any or all of the following:
