After teaching at North Little Rock-West for five years in the business department, Brouke wanted to introduce a new program at the school that would give its students a competitive advantage in finding jobs after graduation. She had recently become a CIW Associate Design Specialist and wanted to teach Web technologies to her aspiring young students.

Brouke easily convinced the school and the director of secondary education to implement the CIW program, emphasizing that the students would be actively interested in learning about the Web and its potential uses.

In just its first semester of offering CIW classes, 60 students enrolled in the CIW courses at North Little Rock-West Campus, proving Brouke's assertion that the students would respond to a Web technologies program if given the opportunity.

"It was a class that I thought our students would enjoy," said Brouke. "The students diligently work everyday in class and are dedicated to learning. I have never experienced such diligence in a subject area. They are truly engaged in learning the subject."

Brouke says that the students are enjoying learning how to properly code in XHTML, particularly through the hands-on labs. The class applied its newly learned skills to help improve the layout and design of the school's Web site, www.nlrsd.k12.ar.us/nlrhswest.

The CIW classes have also spotlighted the business department through which the classes are offered. The department anticipates regularly filling all its CIW classes in upcoming semesters and expects that a majority will take the CIW Foundations examination after taking its Web technologies class.

"[Being CIW certified] will increase their marketability once they leave high school," said Brouke.
